Masterpiece, the stalwart cross-category fair for art, design, antiques, rare books, jewellery and a whole lot more, will launch online on Monday 22nd June, though Corfield Morris will have early access on Sunday 21st June.
The fair is offering its usual program of panel discussions, which you can watch live on their website, as well as 'virtual private views' and 'bespoke tours', and many of the dealers have made videos engaging with specific objects. It will hardly be as fun as the real thing, but there will still be treasures to discover, and you can always swig champagne at home while you virtually wander the aisles. We'd be delighted to guide you through the fair via Zoom or Facetime, and can as ever advise on particular objects if you see something interesting.
Classic Week Online
Classic Week is an umbrella term for a number of 'Classic' category sales taking place at Christie's towards the end of June. There are seven in total, from Old Master paintings and drawings to antiquities, miniatures, and rare books and manuscripts. These sales are taking place online, and you will need to get to grips with online bidding if you see something you would like to pursue.
A word of warning: be wary of the photographs provided by auction houses, which are all-too-often miselading. You should request as many images as you can, from as many different angles as possible and under different lighting conditions and using different cameras, to get the most accurate sense of what an object will actually look like in the flesh.
Woolley & Wallis
With a backlog of objects building up throughout the lockdown period, the provincial auction houses are holding sales throughout the summer, or at least much later than they would normally have done. The best offerings look to be at Woolley & Wallis, where a number of important and interesting pieces will go under the hammer on 11th August. Do let us know if you see something you like and we will happily advise on how to proceed. How many buyers will be participating that late in the summer remains to be seen, but it may well be a chance to snap some bargains while others aren't looking.
