Marine Pictures
As Ellen MacArthur fights her way through the Southern Ocean in her attempt to break the world record for a solo circumnavigation of the globe we can keep ourselves warm and dry viewing the Marine picture auctions that take place next week. As ever Montague Dawson is well represented with a range of oils depicting everything from fishing luggers to clippers. There are also some wonderful works by some of the great 18th century artists such as Peter Monamy, Francis Swaine and Thomas Luny. The sale takes place on Wednesday 26th January.
A West-Country Sleeper
On Thursday 27th January there is a large auction taking place down in the west country - we have sifted through the several hundred lots and come across a small handful of items which are worth considering. The most interesting of which are a pair of Neo-classical console tables originally made for Combe Bank House in Kent. The architect Robert Adam carried out works at Combe Bank for Lord Frederick Campbell in the late 18th century and the tables bear many of Adam's hallmarks. The later painted decoration hides the original carved mahogany and ebonised surfaces - quite possibly a highly important lot hidden away amongst a great deal of "not a lot".
Auction Review
The auctions that took place in the provinces last week did very well, with most lots selling from both of the sales that we highlighted in our last newsletter. Those small signs of recovery seem to be spreading.
