Englishmen in New York

London saw the bulk of the action in terms of antique fairs and auctions
during September, but New York is the place to be in October. There are no
fewer than half a dozen sales of fine English furniture taking place in the
city over the next fortnight followed by the highly regarded International
Fine Art & Antique Dealers Show which runs from the 22nd to the 28th. As
ever there will be the over-priced, the badly restored and the
miss-catalogued. Tim and Daniel will be in New York covering the sales
keeping you abreast of any potential bargains and steering you away from
those carefully disguised howlers! Please do contact us as soon as
possible if anything grabs you!

Picasso Ceramics

There is no need to part with millions of dollars to own a work of art by
Picasso - his ceramics can be acquired for as little as $1000. The ceramics
were all produced at the Madoura pottery in Vallauris in the south of
France. Picasso first visited the pottery in 1946 and returned every year
thereafter, making over 3500 plates, vases, pitchers and other forms, a
number of which were turned into edition pieces. A collection of Picasso
ceramics are being sold later this month, some selected highlights of which
can be seen on the Recommendations pages of the website.

Recommendations

Perhaps one the most enticing lots coming up in New York this month is this
pair of 18th century mahogany window seats that can be attributed to Thomas
Chippendale. They were exhibited at The Art Treasures Exhibition in London
back in 1932 and now carry an estimate of $7000-9000. If these are bought
for anything less than $30,000 the purchaser will have done exceedingly
well.
