The Legend of Dick Turpin
At the end of last year the antiques business lost one of its greatest characters - Maurice 'Dick' Turpin. Dick was a larger than life man in all senses of the word and one of the very last of those dealers active in the post-war decades when the 'trade' was dominant. With no apparent heir to his business, over 850 lots of antique furniture and decorative arts are due to go under the hammer in early March. Together with the contents of his Mayfair showroom the auction will include a number of items which have remained hidden away in various mews houses and lock-ups that Dick had scattered across London. With estimates pitched enticingly low, and any lot with a low estimate of £5000 and below being offered without reserve, this sale represents a real opportunity for the buyer. We have put a selection of lots on the Recommendations pages to give you a feel for the content of the sale. We shall be viewing the sale thoroughly so let us know if this might be of interest.

An Irish George III mahogany side-table from the 'Legend of Dick Turpin' sale
Estimate: £50,000 to £80,000

A right Royal result....for the tax man
The Duke of Gloucester sale we previewed in our last newsletter was huge success, netting over £5 million against a presale mid-estimate of £2 million. Just goes to show what a bit of blue blood can do for you - but in the end the tax man always gets his way! To give you an idea of the frenzied buying we have added the prices achieved to the lots we recommended in the last Newsletter, they can be found on pages 5 to 9 under Recommendations.

Kind regards,

Daniel Morris, Tim Corfield and Martyn Downer
