Martyn Downer joins Corfield Morris
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Martyn Downer as a director of Corfield Morris. Formerly a director of Sotheby's and head of their Jewellery department in London; Martyn brings with him a wealth of experience in a popular area to collectors previously not covered by Corfield Morris.

Martyn Downer

Having grown up surrounded by antiques at his father's country saleroom, Martyn studied history at Edinburgh University before joining Hancocks & Co., the prestigious firm of Jewellers and Silversmiths in London's West End. After moving to Sotheby's as a jewellery specialist in 1992, he was closely involved in the company's high-profile sales and exhibitions in London, New York and Geneva, becoming head of department in 1999. Martyn is a fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain and a freeman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths.

Aside from his career in antiques, Martyn is also a successful author. His first book: Nelson's Purse - an account of his discovery of a lost trove of papers and treasures belonging to Admiral Lord Nelson - was described as a 'truly riveting story, a culminating triumph of assiduous detection and fine scholarship'. He is currently writing an account of life inside the court of Queen Victoria, which will be published by Bantam Press in late 2006.

As a leading authority on antique and modern jewellery and silver Martyn can offer invaluable advice to clients of Corfield Morris whether they are buying, selling or seeking to review their existing collections. With his knowledge, Martyn is also able to advise clients interested in commissioning new bespoke items of jewellery or silver.

By way of an introduction Martyn has chosen a carefully selected group of jewellery and silver for the Recommendations page. Perhaps one of these might make the ideal Christmas present!
